Backward Trajectories
The trajectories are started from surface up to 5000 m altitude, with an equidistant vertical spacing of 200 m, and calculated 120 h backward in time. As long as the trajectories stay in the COSMO1 domain (essentially the Alpine region), as run operationally at MeteoSwiss, the COSMO analysis wind fields are used. When the trajectories leave this domain, they are extended further backward in time based on ECMWF analysis data. The following fields are traced along the trajectories: longitude, latitude, geopotential height, pressure, specific humidity, temperature and surface topography. Furthermore, it is indicated for each trajectory time instance on which model data, COSMO or ECMWF, the trajectory time is based. Finally, the trajectories are started every hour in the specified time period, and positions and fields are available every 10 min. Each day is saved as a separate file. The last 8 digits of the file names indicate the starting date of the trajectories.
